On the northwestern Spanish coast near La Coruna, boutique winemaker Xurxo Alba (sure-sho) creates natural wines from his tiny vineyard situated next to his family's restaurant and tienda, a shop which specializes in local artisanal culinary treasures. His family vineyards extend back over 150 years, however he is the first to earn a degree in oenology and begin bottling the wines for commercial sale. Albarino is the indigenous grape of northwest Spain and is highly influenced by the brisk salty winds emanating from the cold Atlantic waters. These wines are always as fresh and invigorating as a day at the shore with subtle notes of kumquat, lemon and dry white pineapple. Clean, lively, and refreshing, albarino is often served with tuna, mussels, clams, oysters, and fish soup in restaurants all over Spain. (Jenny)
