The hot and arid Toro district, within the broader Castile y Leon region northwest of Madrid, provides Spain with an abundance of exotic, spicy, bold reds to go with the culinary traditions of the region. Numanthia holds the celebrity spotlight for excellence in central Spain with vineyards planted in the Roman era and maintained throughout the Middle Ages till the founding of the current winery in the twentieth century. Some of their ungrafted bush vines are 200 years old, and they are fierce protagonists of the local Tinta de Toro grape, a type of tempranillo. Termes is a bold, vibrant, youthful wine showcasing cinnamon and spicy black fruits, thyme and menthol notes, pine, chocolate, and coffee. Pair a bottle with bold, flavorful meat dishes such as leg of lamb. James Suckling, 96 points. (Jenny)
