Carlos Serres (or Charles) was a French wine consultant in Bordeaux during the catastrophic phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century that devastated vineyards and the wine industry. Panicked shipping magnates charged him to find an area outside of France where more wine could still be made. He discovered perfect terroir in the hamlet of Haro, now the undisputed wine capital of Rioja, Spain, and established his ground-breaking Bodegas Carlos Serres. By 1896 Serres had created the first winery registered as an export merchant in order to cater to the growing international interest in Old World wines. Today, their Crianza is produced from 100% tempranillo and aged 14 months in French and American oak barrels followed by significant bottle aging. The palate delights with a core of ripe cherries, pie spice, a hint of vanilla and sandalwood. (Jenny)
