The dramatically evocative setting of the Abruzzo region of central Italy is familiar to many, and the wines are often remembered long after visitors depart for their stunning taste and character. Within the Nocciano hills sheltering the Bosco family winery, the spectacular geography has recently been declared a UNESCO Global Geopark. In such a privileged setting, the winery is no less magnificent, showcasing an elaborate network of tunnels dug into the mountain to age the wines in enormous Slavonian oak barrels which themselves are lodged in niches. The ‘Pan’ cuvee (montepulciano fortified with 10% cabernet sauvignon) is aged for over a year in these tunnels in medium-toasted barrels and is redolent of plums and rich berry jam, chocolate and cinnamon, spicy pepper and cloves. Traditional pasta alla bolognese or a toothsome focaccia with ham will be nice accompaniments. (Jenny)
