The fame of the Sancerre vineyards stretches back into Antiquity, cited by the Roman Pliny the Elder and in 580 by Grégoire de Tours and even Jean, le Duc de Berry, in the 13th century who declared it the greatest wine in the Kingdom. The Augustinian monks of Saint-Satur cultivated the vines and made the wines prosper by their attentions. Today, experts cite the dramatic influence of the underlying ancient shelf of Kimmeridgian limestone which is held responsible for the remarkable taste of the wines. Sauvignon blanc is now the primary cultivar, along with the traditional pinot noir for the red wines. The Reverdy-Ducroux ‘Beau Roy’ is elegantly fruity with a brilliant yellow hue and notes of citrus, pear and apricot stone, perfect with seafood stew or white fish in a light and savory ginger and lemongrass sauce.
