500 years, and probably longer. Located in the heart of Sancerre, the Mellot family has been cultivating the verdant slopes of the Cher and Loir rivers for five centuries, gradually extending their reach to 200 acres of prime vineyard lands in the Franche Comté. Records dating from 1513 attest that Pierre-Etienne Mellot was a vintner of renown in the area, and his descendant César Mellot became wine counselor to King Louis XIV in 1698. Today the dynamic Mellot family continues this legacy with a modern winery built in 1990 by Alexandre and Joseph Mellot, and wine production by Alexandre's wife Cathérine.
The Mellot Pouilly-Fumé (100% sauvignon blanc) exudes seductive and harmonious floral and almost tropical fruit elements. These aromas derive from the rich right bank soils composed of silex (flint), clay, and Kimmeridgian limestone full of fossils from the ancient shallow seabed that covered most of France. Notes of subtle acacia blossom, hawthorn, pineapple, citrus and persimmon enlace a supple and abundant mouthfeel. (Jenny)
