The owner/winemaker for Rioja’s Bodegas Santalba recently visited Spiritus while making a tour of the American northeast, and we particularly enjoyed his Ermita de San Felices Crianza among several stand-out bottles. The winery is headquartered near the ancient city of Haro, which could be considered the “Bordeaux” of northern Spain and the heart of all things Rioja. His wine is named for the patron saint of Haro and is prized by international celebrities such as Spanish golf legend José Maria Olazábal, who made a YouTube video praising it. This is a deep ruby wine with hints of black, ripe with vanilla and cherry cola notes, cigar box, powerful and structured. Roberto recommends it with duck in orange sauce, pork in mustard, mature and semi-mature cheeses, grilled or stewed wild mushrooms and game meats. (Jenny)
