The Dolomite range of northern Italy's Alto Adige region looks more like the Sound of Music than the Italy with which you are probably familiar, and the local Italians live and eat with a decidedly Austrian flair. The Saint Michael Eppan winery perched near the base of these majestic peaks has created yet another spectacularly delicious and authentic regional take on the Lagrein grape, one for adventurous wine drinkers in search of traditional Old World wines. This red revels in a primitive earthy rusticity with an almost grainy texture. Notes of rhubarb, beefsteak tomato, mulberry, and tea leaves would marry well with rosemary lamb shank and small red potatoes, pork with caramelized leeks and carrots, or beef rib stew. (Jenny)
