Perhaps the oldest named winery in the world dating from at least 63 BC, yes 2000 years ago, Nikolaihof just west of Vienna was once a Roman stronghold (whose tower still stands) taken over by Germanic monks during the collapse of the Roman Empire in 470 A.D. This revered Austrian treasure is certified biodynamic (more difficult to achieve than official organic status) and still functions as a bio-diverse farm cultivating numerous varieties of herbs and flowers, fruits and honey, grapes and grapeseed oil. Their iconic gruner veltliner is chiseled and precise, dramatically crisp yet exploding with notes of honeysuckle, ginger, straw, lemongrass, and sweet-tart apple. As critic James Suckling (who deemed it worthy of 90 points) exclaims: "The bright nose of flint, green apple and cassis pulls you into this refreshing young gruner veltliner, which has stacks of fresh-herb character and plenty of depth on the medium-bodied palate. Crisp finish with nice wet-stone minerality. Matured sur-lie until immediately before bottling." (Jenny)
