From the 10th to the 18th century, the Abbey of Cluny in southern Burgundy was the most powerful Benedictine stronghold in all of Europe, and was crowned with the largest Romanesque church ever built. The monks produced Burgundian wines celebrated during the Ancien Régime, and the current Vignes de Saint Germain was part of their vineyard landholdings. Now owned by the Mariller family, the current estate encompasses 42 hectares on a sunny hill overlooking the hamlet of Azé. This is a juicy Burgundy with black raspberry, cinnamon and ground cloves, smoky dark cocoa, iron and an energetic spine. $20 Burgundy! (Jenny)
