The Sperone family opened a wine shop in 1911 but were unhappy with the quality of the wines they could find to sell, so they created their own winery in Puglia to supply the shop. This winery was destroyed during World War II, so the family moved their operations to the region of Milan, producing vermouth and sparkling wines. In 1983 Franco Serra's grandson purchased more elite vineyard lands in Piedmont and founded a new winery in the tiny hamlet of Mombaruzzo. The family's Barbera d'Asti is an incredible value gem showing red and black cherry fruit, pleasantly acidic raspberry coulis, light tobacco, and an earthy, piney note of eucalyptus. This is an eminently flexible food-pairing wine in the grand Old World tradition. Try it with lasagna, pizza and hamburgers. (Jenny)
