Just across the border of Hungary into Austria, Evolucio is also crafting a heritage wine from blaufränkisch grapes, long thought to be related to gamay but actually only a cousin to good Cru Beaujolais. This grape appeals for the same reasons though with its bright, light texture, hint of velvet, crisp red berries, and underlying broodiness. The Burgenland region in eastern Austria is celebrated for producing some of the most sought-after red wines in the country, in particular the ones made from blaufränkisch, fine-tuned by the warmer climate of the European interior. Blackberry, dark moreno cherries, soft dusty tannins, and allspice notes will make this a versatile dinner companion. (Jenny)
