To say Helmut Donnhoff is one of the top winemakers in Germany is not enough to do his work justice. His wines have an almost cult-like following and deservedly so. The 20 hectares of Donhoff’s estate reside in Nahe, a region south of the Mosel that has never received as much acclaim compared to its northerly neighbor. Meticulous in his vineyards, he strives to allow each site to speak its own terroir in its own bottling much like a Burgundian winemaker. ‘Tonschiefer’ translates as ‘dry slate’ and is the prominent characteristic of his steep, hillside vineyard Oberhauser Leistenberg. Crisp and brisk, this racy riesling shows fresh Granny Smith apple and stony minerality. Marry a bottle with roasted pork loin and autumnal root vegetables, enjoy as an aperitif with nuts and cheese, or plan ahead for your Thanksgiving feast. (Gary)
