Spicy, robust, herbal red wines are a staple of France’s northern Rhone River region, with its most famous appellation, Hermitage, always in the global spotlight. Its kissing cousin, Crozes-Hermitage, surrounds the famous hillside to the east and south, producing its share of delicious syrah reds with far more affordable price tags. This example from the highly-regarded Delas winery showcases beautiful purity with aromatic forest berries, red plum, fresh herbs and macerated raspberry that glide across a satin-like texture. The delicate gravel undertones give the wine complexity and depth for mixed grills, stewed meat, lamb, duck, and charcuterie. Wine Spectator, 91 points. (Gary)
