A perennial favorite at Spiritus returns with a new release! For over thirty years and three generations, Chateau de Beaucastel has been a standard bearer for Chateauneuf du Pape, but the real value gem from the estate is the ‘Coudoulet’ bottling made with a similar mourvedre, grenache and syrah based blend.
Labeled under the more humble appellation Cotes du Rhone, the grapes are actually sourced from an estate-owned plot across the road from their Chateauneuf vineyard with nearly identical soil composition and strewn with the area’s famous galets, or rounded stones. The Perrin’s strict viticulture and organic methods in the field, followed by conscientious winemaking in the cellar consistently produce the most serious of Cotes du Rhones. Dark and concentrated, this “baby Beaucastel” features a mix of red and black fruits, lavender, iron and a peppery finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 90-92 points: "The 2020 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel continues this cuvée's hot streak. It boasts attractive floral overtones, hints of crushed stone and ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied and impressively silky for such a young wine, it should be drinkable upon release and for at least a decade thereafter."
