Last week we mentioned how one can find tremendous values just down the road from more prestigious properties. Here is another prime example. Caronne Sainte Gemme is situated just outside the famous Bordeaux town of Saint Julien and neighbors the Classified Second Growth Chateau Gruaud Larose. In the outstanding vintage of 2018, this blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 5% petit verdot delivers a stellar Left Bank experience of rich blackcurrant, black cherry and violets with an underpinning of oak and vanilla on a medium- to full-body. Ready-to-drink now or cellar it for another five years, it’s ideal with grilled lamb chops or a bone-in ribeye. This is also a wine to purchase by the case and enjoy a couple bottles per year to experience its continuing development. Decanter, 92 points; James Suckling, 92 points. (Gary)
