In the early 1990’s, the French family that brought the world Grand Marnier liqueur purchased prized vineyard land in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, south of Santiago. Today, the family’s seventh generation oversees the estate and this subregion known as Apalta has earned its own official D.O. status. This cabernet sauvignon gains some nuanced complexity from small additions of cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot, along with aging in French oak barrels (only 30% new). Hints of allspice, bay leaf and menthol enhance its palate of cherries and cassis, all in search of grilled ribeye, NY strip or lamb chops. James Suckling, 94 points. (Gary)
