Bodegas LAN is not the first Rioja winery to explore producing white wine outside of their home region, which is best-suited for reds. LAN’s inaugural bottling of verdejo from the grape’s native Rueda region northwest of Madrid is the culmination of the efforts of two women: Maria Barua, LAN’s head winemaker, and Olga Tormo, a verdejo expert. Utilizing 100% verdejo from estate-owned vineyards, they crafted this remarkable white carrying notes of white nectarine, lime and a slightest hint of aniseed, with an underlying soft texture from lees-aging including batonnage. Absolutely delicious, you can eagerly pair it with everything from a variety of tapas to simply-grilled fish filets or crispy-skin chicken thighs. (Gary)
