Fresh local cider, rustling dried leaves, carved pumpkins, these are all unmistakeable signs of Fall. Alas, so are the shockingly early sunsets! But what better way to cope with shortened days than to have something seasonal to sip during the extended evenings? Each year, we enjoy introducing more customers to the calvados-based liqueur from Normandy, France, called pommeau.
Hard cider (or cidre) is a centuries-old tradition in the orchard-laden landscape of the interior of Normandy. Sometimes, this cidre is then distilled, creating the local apple brandy named calvados, a powerful apple-toned digestif. But if you're interested in something less strong, look no further than the region's lesser-known specialty named pommeau de Normandie. In this example, producer Christian Drouin blends his calvados (25%) with slightly-sweet fresh apple juice (75%) and then ages it for over three years in oak barrels. The result is a unique liqueur with 17% alcohol that can be enjoyed either before or after dinner. Try it with blue cheese, mixed nuts or an apple spice cake. (Gary)
